Don't Tell The Bumble Bee

Over there. Can you hear it? Over by the window, up against the glass. That fat buzzing thing, all noise and whirring wings: the bumble bee, trapped in a hot room on a sunny day.

You have, it seems to me, four options. You could ignore it, you could squish it (why would you do that?) or you could just open the window and watch Mr Bumble buzz away to freedom. That's three options. Option four? Step close, look at it. I mean it. Go on - really, really look at it.

OK - what do you see? You see tiny wings and a big fat body. No two ways about it - sleek, lightweight and streamlined this busy guy ain't. And, as scientists will tell you, Mr Bumble's weight to lift ratios are all wrong. There is just no way, say the scientists that, Mr Bumble Bee can fly (Antoine Magnan 1934 1).

Except that, no-one has told Mr Bumble Bee.
And so he flies. (Now let him go).

We believe very strongly that we all have the ability to do amazing things.
So… what often stops us?

Other people's opinion that we can't, coupled to a lack of self-belief and self-confidence that gives room to a little voice, up there in our brains, that whispers “I can't. That I am unable, incapable, doomed to failure (how I hate that word!).

It whispers we're not strong enough, not fast enough, not fit enough, not attractive enough. And you know what? If we listen to that little voice often enough, we start to believe it, get dragged down into the world of grey, gloomy-faced Eeyores to whom the glass of life is always not just half-empty but dirty, cracked and leaking, to boot.
Been there. Done that.

But the Bumble Bee never told itself that it couldn't fly.
