Intelligence
IQ vs. EQ
When we talk about 'intelligence' most people think only in terms of IQ, such as mathematical aptitude, logical ability and verbal reasoning. But researchers now say that IQ only accounts for 20% of our intelligence: a massive 80% of our true intelligence lies in something called emotional intelligence, or 'EQ'.
Knowing your mind
Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, to understand and to express our feelings accurately. It is about self-awareness (knowing your goals, beliefs and values), self-motivation and positively managing our emotions. It is also about our relationships with others: our ability to communicate effectively and to help others solve problems, resolve differences, get motivated and work together as a cohesive team.
Emotionless
People with poor levels of emotional intelligence will never achieve their true potential because their lives lack the necessary impetus and direction and because - even if they were able to identify what they wanted from life - they struggle to form essential relationships with people needed to support them and champion their cause. What's more, an emotional intelligence deficit will have a negative impact on work life too: failure to communicate effectively with work colleagues will result in tension, lack of motivation and under-achievement across the board.
An acquired skill
But all is not lost. Emotional intelligence is a learned ability and, whilst it's very unlikely that you developed much EQ through the standard school curriculum, at PDC it is integral to everything we do because we understand its power and potential. Our courses teach you simple and practical techniques for boosting your EQ, helping you to identify the sort of person you want to become and showing you how to remodel your behaviour to get the best out of yourself, and others.
